05 · Bridges

Verrazano–Narrows, Brooklyn Bridge & East River crossings

Verrazano–Narrows Bridge connects Staten Island and Brooklyn across The Narrows. It opened its upper six lanes on 11/21/1964 after five years and $325 million, with a main span of 1298m. It was the world’s longest suspension bridge until the Humber Bridge in 1981 and remains the longest suspension bridge in the United States. It is named after Giovanni da Verrazzano and is famous as the New York City Marathon starting point.

Brooklyn Bridge is described as America’s oldest suspension bridge and the first using steel wire: 1834m, Gothic style, opened 5/24/1883 after 14 years by John Augustus Roebling, Washington Augustus Roebling and Emily Warren Roebling. 150,000 people crossed on the first day. It was the world’s longest suspension bridge until Williamsburg Bridge in 1903; elevated rail ran until 1944 and streetcars until 1950.

07 · Bronx & Queens

Dr. Hideyo Noguchi and 5Pointz

Dr. Hideyo Noguchi: 1876–1928. The archive notes that his grave was restored by a JMSA donation and a ceremony was held on 11/15/2009. Noguchi was born in Fukushima in 1876, came to America in 1900 for medical research, joined the Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research, received honorary professorships from Yale University and Tokyo Imperial University, married Mary Dargis in 1911, and later worked around the world, especially in South and Central Africa. He died of yellow fever in Ghana on 5/21/1928 at age 51, and on 6/13 his remains were brought to New York by order of Rockefeller II and buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.

5Pointz Aerosol Art Center: 1892 built as a water meters factory. Graffitied building from the 1990s while the interior was occupied by about 200 artists’ studios. Address: 45-46 Davis St, Long Island City, NY 11101. Destroyed 2015.
